Empty Leg Flights, Explained: What They Are and How to Get the Real Discount

Empty Leg Flights, Explained: What They Are and How to Get the Real Discount

We get asked about empty leg flights constantly. Some version of the same question, most days: is there anything cheap going my way?

For years the honest answer was uncomfortable. There probably was. Finding it, though, meant dropping everything to go hunt it down. And it was rare that one existed at the exact time, date and route a charter client is used to asking for. Some clients do have flexibility, though, and flexibility is what this market rewards.

That gap is why we built EmptLeg.com, a private jet empty leg search engine that gives you the flexibility to find them and the tools to book them yourself.

What is an empty leg flight?

An empty leg is any flight a private jet makes without passengers on board.

Most people picture the return trip: a jet flies a client one way, then flies back to base or on to its next pickup. That is the common case, but only one of them. Empty legs happen before a trip as often as after. An aircraft positions in to pick up an owner, repositions for an operator’s own schedule, or flies in empty to start a charter.

What they share is that the flight is happening anyway and the operator is paying for it either way. So they sell it, at a steep discount, to whoever wants that route on that day. You will also see them called repositioning flights, ferry flights, or one way private jet deals.

Everyone comes out ahead. You get a private flight at a fraction of charter pricing, and the operator recovers cost on a flight that would otherwise earn nothing. When the leg was flown to collect an aircraft owner, that revenue offsets some of the fuel and operating cost the owner carries on their own airplane. Nobody loses on a seat that was going to fly empty regardless.

What an empty leg really saves you, and where the savings go

A genuine empty leg can run as much as 80% below what the same aircraft costs as a full charter. Not every leg is discounted that steeply. But on a larger aircraft or a longer route, even a mid range discount is tens of thousands of dollars on a single flight.

That is the first layer of savings. The second is what you don’t hand to a middleman.

Operators have the strongest incentive to earn a retail client’s business directly. They want the relationship, and their best price is how they get it. They work with brokers too, and give brokers good pricing, but a broker has to make the flight worth their while. That markup is not unreasonable, and I say that as a broker. A single charter booking takes several hours across days of professional effort. It is earned work, shared out of the deal the way a real estate commission is. Depending on the relationship it might be modest, or 20% or more.

The catch is that the markup comes off the top of a price that was already deeply discounted. Remove it and you realize the whole empty leg saving instead of a share of it. On a flight where the discount is already tens of thousands, buying direct is worth thousands more again.

Most sites listing empty legs are run by charter brokers. That is not sinister, it is just the business model, and it changes your number. A fair test for any empty leg site: does it hand you the operator, or does it quote you? If you can’t tell who you are buying from, someone is standing between you and the aircraft, whatever the site calls itself.

We decided not to be that. EmptLeg is paid by your subscription, never by your flight. We don’t quote, negotiate, mark up or take payment for charter. You get the operator’s contact and deal with them directly, so the operator’s price is your price.

Why empty legs are hard to find

They aren’t listed anywhere central. They surface in hundreds of places at once, and none of those places talk to each other. Some get published. Many never do.

Then they move. An empty leg exists because of an operator’s schedule, and schedules change. A good one can sell within minutes of appearing, so if you find one, lock it down. A stale list does not mean everything on it is gone, but some of it no longer exists, and nothing on the page tells you which.

How EmptLeg works

EmptLeg gathers empty leg availability directly from operators through a range of channels, nationwide and international, then continuously normalizes and de-duplicates all of it into one searchable place. We are not chasing raw volume. We carry the majority of the best vetted operators’ empty legs rather than every leg on every aircraft anyone will list, because the quality of the operator matters more than the length of the list.

Search with a radius and a date window. A hundred miles around your departure, seventy five around your arrival, give or take three days. That flexibility is where the inventory lives, and it earns its own section below.

Freshness and confidence, shown honestly. Every listing carries when we last verified it, and whether one source described it or several. A stale listing is labeled, not hidden.

Route watching. Higher tier subscriptions watch your routes and notify you the moment a match appears, without a commission attached.

Guidance built in. We are adding tips and guidance to help each empty leg actually come together, drawn from doing this ourselves for years.

The search trick that surprises people

Widen the radius around your arrival airport.

Most people search the exact route they want, find nothing, and decide there is nothing there. But an aircraft repositioning to an airport sixty miles from where you are going is still an aircraft going roughly where you are going. Often the operator will extend that leg to your real destination for far less than a full charter, because for them it is a short addition to a flight they were already making.

This matters most on long distance legs. A coast to coast or international repositioning flight can be discounted very heavily, and it is worth taking even if it lands a few hundred miles from where you meant to end up. Weigh the drive against what you are saving before you rule it out.

The exact route rarely shows an empty leg. The neighborhood often does.

Why you will not see a photo of every aircraft

This is deliberate. Aircraft photos go out of date. Interiors get refurbished, paint gets redone, aircraft change hands, and many operators run floating fleets where the aircraft assigned to a trip changes constantly.

So on a lot of charter sites, the beautiful photo beside a listing is not the aircraft that shows up. It is a representative image of the type, not the tail you will board. Showing you one airplane and delivering another is misleading, and we would rather not participate in it. Ask the operator instead. Their formal quote will include photos of the specific aircraft they are offering, matched to exactly what you are buying. We are not going to fill you with fluff. We would rather let the data do what it does best and point you at the person who knows the answer.

What to expect when you book one

Empty legs are not charter flights with a discount attached, and going in with the right expectations is most of what makes them work.

Think of it as a ladder. If you would rather not fly commercial or sit in a congested airport, private is the answer. If a full charter is out of reach, an empty leg often isn’t. Add some flexibility and you can save a great deal.

What it will never be is the price of an economy ticket, and rightfully so. Owners are particular about who flies on their aircraft, and you are not splitting the cost among two hundred people. Expect the price to reflect what it is, which is a private experience with an entire airplane to yourself, one that costs millions a year to operate.

They are one way, and departure time is usually driven by the operator’s schedule. There is often some flexibility, but not unlimited.

Always make the quick call to confirm. Find out exactly what the operator is selling, their real price, and what flexibility they have to make it work for you. A listing is the start of that conversation, not a booking.

Once confirmed they are generally reliable, because the underlying flight usually has to happen regardless. When something does change, it is in the operator’s interest to protect the relationship, and they will often work to keep the schedule intact, sometimes including an upgrade to a different aircraft. It runs both directions. If their schedule shifts, some flexibility may be needed on your end. And not every empty leg works out. Some sell before you call. That is the nature of buying a seat on someone else’s logistics, and the ones that do come together are extraordinary value.

EmptLeg and AmeriCharter are different things

AmeriCharter is top tier charter service, not cheap discounted legs. It is for when the flight matters: your schedule, your terms, the right aircraft for the mission, without the hassle. We work only with vetted sources, known entities and referrals, and we do not sell empty legs or routinely match clients to them. That level of involvement takes considerably more effort and is available to select clientele.

EmptLeg is open to anyone. Maybe it connects you with an operator you go on to work with for years. That is our gift to you and to the operator, for a small subscription fee.

We are also building versions for brokers and operators, so they can serve their own clients more effectively from the same data. The mission is the same either way: give clients and operators more of what they are looking for.

Who built it

EmptLeg was built by AmeriCharter Inc and US aviation professionals, out of more than two decades of hands on charter experience. That experience is why it works the way it does. Radius search exists because inventory clusters near your route, not on it. The direct to operator model exists because we know exactly what a markup does to a discounted flight.

This is not a white labeled listings feed assembled overseas. It is a working tool built by people who book private jet flights for a living, drawing on nationwide and global sources, improved continuously.

EmptLeg is not a charter broker. It does not arrange flights, quote prices, negotiate, act as anyone’s agent or take payment for charter. Every flight arrangement is made directly between you and the operator.

Start looking

Map browsing on EmptLeg.com is free to use. Put in a route you actually want, widen the radius around both ends, and see what is moving. If something looks right, call the operator and lock it down.

Search empty legs now

And when the flight matters more than the discount, that is the other side of what we do. Talk to us at AmeriCharter.

EmptLeg is a search and alert service, not a charter broker. Availability, pricing, timing and aircraft are set by the operator and can change or sell out at any time. Savings vary by route, aircraft and operator. Always confirm details directly with the operator before relying on a listing.
